Caterina Scalvedi (Wake Forest University), Research Grant for a project entitled Subjects of Empire: Italian Colonialism, Education, and Development in Africa and the Mediterranean (1890-1959).

Caterina Scalvedi (PhD, History, University of Illinois Chicago) is a historian of modern European empires, focusing on Italian colonialism in Africa. The Ragusa Foundation grant supports her book-project Subjects of Empire: Italian Colonialism, Education, and Development in Africa and the Mediterranean (1890-1959), which explores the social and intellectual history of education in Eritrea, Somalia, Libya, and Ethiopia under Italian rule and in the early postcolonial period. Dr. Scalvedi’s research interests include nation and empire building, fascism, education, church-state relations, and the transition from colonial to postcolonial societies.
