Simone Brioni (SUNY- Stony Brook) for the project Dardanelles: National Belonging in Transnational ‘Italian’ Cultures.

Simone Brioni is a filmmaker and Professor in the English Department at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. A specialist in migration studies, critical race and ethnicity studies, and film studies, his research examines literary and filmic representations and self‑representations of migrants, colonial photography, and the memory and legacy of past atrocities. His work also engages with collaborative artistic practices, the construction of alterity in science fiction, translation theory and practice, and questions of performativity and embodiment. His most recent monograph is the visual art book Shrapnel (Brescia: Casa della memoria, 2025), a meditation on the 1974 Piazza della Loggia massacre in Brescia that examines how photographs, films, and memorials shape public consciousness and expose Italy’s divided memory of the past.
